Since the 1970s, the 3000-horsepower EMD SD40-2 has been a mainstay in the BNSF locomotive fleet. Despite the large number of newer Dash 9 and Evolution Series locomotives in use today, the SD40-2 remains an important part of the overall BNSF locomotive fleet. Known for their overall performance, simplicity and reliability, the SD40-2 is likely to remain in service on the BNSF for years to come.
BNSF maintains one of the largest fleets of grain covered hoppers in North America. These cars can be seen all over the BNSF system hauling grain and other agricultural commodities to market or to a port for export. These cars are a common sight on Stevens Pass, often in solid trains of 100 cars or more.
